Unit 20 discusses how to identify problems situations and ways to deal with them. The first class can be stressful for both the teacher and students. The best way to handle this awkwardness is to plan activities that will allow you and the students, to get to know each other and find out why they are learning English (what their motivation is). A few activities suggested to accomplish these goals include: Get-to-Know-You Bingo, questionnaires, and Pass the Ball. Another difficult situation that may arise in the classroom is having students functioning at different levels. The teacher must be aware of the levels of the students in the classroom and be prepared to differentiate instruction accordingly. It is very important for teachers to encourage students to speak in English and the teacher should only respond to students in English.
