This lesson discusses the principles of teaching reading and listening skills. Students need both skills to get information in a foreign language, with listening skills being predictably a bit harder to learn because it is fast and often unrepeated. Exposure to language, while choosing texts and listenings that are interesting is key to motivate the students to practice gleaning information from a foreign language source.
We read and listen for many purposes (predicting, skimming, scanning, and obtaining detailed information), and helping students receive information for each of the purposes is more helpful, so I want to obtain activities that help students practice each of the four skills. Often, lessons are focused on small details, when often students want to gain big picture understanding of what they are looking at. I also like the idea of using music in lessons to help get the students interested in listening.
