In Unit 18: Modals, Phrasal Verbs, and Passive Voice, I was made aware of a host of writing styles, and their details, rules, and procedures. Modal verbs are any verb that is used before another verb to add meaning, whereas Phrasal Verbs are verbs combined with prepozitions or adverbs to create an expression. Modal verbs include: may, might, could, should, must, need to, will, and ought to and they are used to express permission, possibility of an action, degree of certainty, in giving advice, in stating obligation and stating ability. I was made aware of what Modal verbs to use when a polite phrase is necessary, such as may, could, and would, and what Modal verbs to use in expressing obligation, such as should, must, and ought to. Phrasal Verbs are sometimes tricky for EFL students to learn because of their being combined with prepozitions, but a heedful teacher will add them to a vocab list and then not neglect to use them from time to time in class. Finally, Passive voice is a strategy in writing where the ordinary sentence is written with a past participle. It is used when the agent, or the doer of the action, is not the focus, or is not known. These are all key details for EFL students to know in writing clearly and creatively.
