Modals are verbs which add meaning to other verbs. They express the speaker?s feelings to the verb ?to be?. They are very subjective in intent and tone. There are nine (9) true modal auxiliary verbs. The verbs include: may, must, might, could, can, have to, and would. There are others called ?semi modals?, such as ?need to?. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to express ability, advice, deduction, obligation, offer, permission, possibility, prediction, prohibition, promise, and request. The Unit gives examples of ways to teach model verbs, and explains the possible pitfalls students may experience using modals. The difference between active and passive voice is explained. The important point regarding the passive voice is to keep the verb ?to be? in the same tense as the verb in the active tense. This is a problem students of English find difficult. Teaching ideas are presented, which include the ?matching game?.
