I strongly agree with the idea that beginning a children's class in a firm (strict) manner and then relaxing it is much better than trying to gain control of an initially relaxed class. Children will test the teacher, and in some cultures having a \"Western\" teacher is all the more reason to play around. That being said, I love teaching kids as many learn English so quickly. I do think that knowing the local language, at least with respect to the alphabet and some vocabulary, can prove immensely beneficial and save a lot of time and headaches. English immersion should be used in the classroom, but some translation (or transliteration) is also good.
