Past tense usage is similar to present tense usage, but it signifies actions that occurred, or were occurring, in the past. As with many verbs in the present tense, there are many past tense verbs that have irregular formations. The students will be challenged to learn and practice all of the formations, especially because there will be a lot of memorization for the irregularly formed verbs. Some common mistakes are improperly conjugating the auxiliary verbs and leaving the ING off the end of the past continuous and past perfect continuous formations. However, a good teacher will provide clear and engaging lessons using varied tools such as flash cards, interviews, journaling, and story-telling - and of course, encouraging the students to speak with one another as well
