To be a successful teacher, planning the lesson and assessing student progress to inform subsequent lessons is an important skill to acquire.
There are three succinct reasons why planning a lesson is important.
We plan because:
a.we want students to succeed and planning helps the teacher to focus on what the learning outcome of the lesson should be. It encourages a logical progression through each phase of the lesson, regardless of the ESA format applied.
b. we need to have a point of reference to ensure that we reach the target of the lesson. While this is important we should bear in mind that we should not allow the lesson plan to be so inflexible that it denies spontaneity in the lesson or the opportunity for the students to spend slightly longer on an activity that they find particularly interesting or productive for the learning.
c. we need to keep a record of lessons taught so that they can be reused or modified at a later date. It is useful to have a notation of materials used which can inform subsequent planning. It is also vital to have a lesson planned in case a substitute teacher has to fill in at any time.
