This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 16 covered conditionals and reported speech. There are five conditionals, zero, first, second, third and mixed. Conditionals are concerned with the part of speech when an action occurs then another action or situation will or could occur, maybe, depending on the conditional used.
The Zero conditional refers to certainties and consists of when/if+present tense+present tense.
The first conditional covers situations that may occur and its form is if+present tense, will.
The second conditional communicates a present or future unreal hypothetical situation and its form is if+past simple, would could, might+base form of the verb.
The third conditional communicates a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical result. Its form is if+past perfect tense, would, could, might+have+past participle.
the mixed conditional communicates a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical present result. It named mixed because the form is if=past perfect tense, would+base form of the verb a mixture of the third conditional and second conditional.
The section on reported speech taught the necessary changes that need to be made to direct speech. Such as the shift back from one tense to the corresponding past tense, the changing of pronouns and shifting the time properly. I found this unit particularly helpful because it forced me to review and better commit to memory the present and past tenses.
