This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Over the years I have given my fair share of exams as an ESL teacher most notably progress test. In my experience teaching younger learners I have found that progress test are often not the best way to evaluate a learners true progression during the course of a semester. As the unit details many students will often study to memorize the material for the exams. This method of study in my opinion is the worst thing a learner can do if they want to succeed in their learning. Teaching in Asia I often find that high test scores doesn't translate to practical use of language. I have met many university students who have scored high on TOEFL and TOPIK whose English speaking ability is no better than an elementary school age English learner.
Personally, I don't find test in my classroom useful for elementary age learners and that proper assessments can be made with assignments and classroom work. I feel that exams put too much pressure on learners and restrict their ability to learn freely.
