When thinking about unit 16, I appreciate the fact that I am a native speaker of English because I would not want to have to learn this material (conditionals) as a non-native student. So yes, I understand the emphasis on teaching this material slowly and thoroughly. Another thought is that, in my mind, there are sometimes differences in meaning between using \"If\" and \"When\"; for example, \"If I have enough money . . .\" suggests that it might not happen, whereas \"When I have enough money . . .\" suggests that it will happen (I have a goal, I am saving my money). When I taught direct vs. reported speech, I was surprised at how quickly students (6th-7th graders) caught on.
