There are various reasons why it is important for teacher to evaluate their students. Placement tests are used in order to find out the level of the students so they can be directed to the correct group. Students could get bored if placed in a level that is too easy and they could lose motivation and confidence if placed in a group way beyond their language abilities. After the groups are formed, it is useful for the teacher to give a Diagnostic test in order to know what the students already know, their strengths and their weaknesses. Progress test are used to see what the students remember and determine what needs more work. There are also Practice tests that are given during the course in order to prepare the students for the external exam they want to write. There are many different kinds of external exams (external as opposed to the tests given during the course at schools or training centers). There are practice test for work purposes, academic purposes or just common communication purposes. These tests are designed differently depending on whether the student want to immigrate, work or study in an English speaking country. The most famous of these tests are the TOFEL, the IELTS, the TOEIC and different Cambridge assessments.
