This unit reviewed the complexities of teaching and understanding pronunciation in the English language, in terms of intonation, stress, and the phonemic alphabet. Pronouncing English for those for whom it is not a first language can be extremely difficult, as spelling and pronunciation do not always line up. This lesson provided a comprehensive overview of how a teacher might approach teaching pronunciation in an English class. I agree that it is important to not ignore pronunciation, as it will help students better communicate and feel more confident in their speaking skills. The unit provided some background in order for the teacher to explain pronunciation as clearly as possible. In addition to pronunciation, intonation and stress play a crucial role in conveying meaning in speech. Varying intonations and stresses may alter the meaning of a statement or question, and so it is important that students are able to a) deduce meaning from stress/intonation and b) convey meaning through stress/intonation. The unit provided some helpful techniques on how to teach this in the classroom.
