There are pros/cons of using authentic and created materials for ESL students. As a new teacher, having a coursebook and ready-to-go worksheets, is very helpful to help me understand the basics of a curriculum. However, I am expanding more this year and integrating more topics and realia. Authentic materials are real and therefore more interesting and motivating. Students gain confidence when they understand them. They can be geared to the interest of a particular group of students. It's important to strike a balance between using authentic and created materials. There are four options for course book use: omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
