This unit breaks down the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book to teach a class, and provides ways in which teachers can use a course book most effectively. Course books are advantageous for many reasons; their syllabi are tested and therefore more reliable, they can help the teacher manage their time properly, they provide a well balanced curriculum, and they can be visually appealing and well designed for an easy interpretation. There are disadvantages of course, being that course books are designed for a general group and therefore may cater to a specific demographic more than another. They also can make teachers lazy or complicit in the material and how it is being taught, despite how well a class is progressing. Because of the various disadvantages, it is best that a teacher uses them as more of a guide and not a script for every single lesson taught in a course. If there is a particular need the students have, or a topic is taught in a confusing manner in the course book, teachers can utilize their own materials, created or authentic, and use their own creativity to teach the course in an effective manner.
