Reading and writing are skills more easily learned by students because the material is 'captured' on the page for them to read as many times as they need. These receptive skills are typically less intimidating for students than productive skills (listening and speaking). There are approaches to teaching, in particular, the productive skills in order to ease students into these harder language skills. An important and useful technique to do so is to get the students interested and motivated about whatever subjects they have an interest in - even if this means individually catering to each student in order to do so. A student who has a high interest in a particular subject will be much more inclined to study vocabulary and other aspects of that topic in order to study language.
