This unit covered the various methodologies that have been applied throughout history to teach languages effectively. Each methodology is a reflection of the developments in psychology (beginning with grammar-translation in the 17th century to the ESA method in 1998) due to increased and changing knowledge regarding language learning acquisition. The unit emphasizes the use of the Engage, Study, Activate method which basically takes all the positive attributes of previous methodologies and comprises them into one. The ESA method is particularly useful because its structure is extremely flexible, encourages communication, and works for all language level types. I found that the examples provided for each stage were helpful for inspiring a variety of classroom activities.
