This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The first lesson contained a very ineffective teacher. He began by introducing a concept that was clearly unfamiliar to the students, and did not explain it to them, merely repeated the words. His Engage phase did not engage the students at all, they were bewildered and confused.
During the Study section he spent more time sitting in his chair than walking around providing assistance, and during the Activate phase he read a book. This teacher did not create an environment in which the students were interested in learning, or even really capable of it.
In lesson two the teacher was much more effective. He made an effort to engage the students at the beginning of class, and learned their names. He effectively moved phases of class from one to the next.
The differences in preparation and in teaching style were immediately obvious, and so was the effect on the students. We can observe from this how much effect a teacher can have on the learning of their students.
