Conditionals and reported speech, to me, seem like they could become very confusing for students who are learning English, because as I was reviewing this unit, I was having a little bit of a hard time keeping track of everything. I never realized how many particular rules went into something so simple as relaying what another person said. Conditionals refer to the if/when statements of past, present, and future situations, in a general \"if..., then...\" style. Direct speech is what person 1 says to person 2, and reported speech is person 2 taking that same information, changing it to make sense coming from person 2, and then sharing it with person 3.
