This lesson focused on a lot of important classroom management topics, such as using eye contact and gestures, grouping students in various ways, arranging the position of students, the position of the teacher, giving students individual attention, and comparing student and teacher talk time. A very important aspect of any classroom is the establishment of rapport. I particularly appreciated the ideas of using pair-work, looking like you enjoy the job and smiling, and showing personal interest in the students whenever an opportunity arises. And then there is discipline. The best kind is avoiding problems in the first place by being well prepared by being consistent and fair, by showing respect for all students, and by being enthusiastic about the teaching lessons. When you have to discipline, act immediately and focus on the behavior and not the student, keeping calm, and keeping to the school's disciplinary code so that the discipline is appropriate for the situation.
