Unit 14 talks about books and study materials. There are 2 types of study materials 1) authentic and 2) created. Authentic materials consist of anything a native speaker would encounter on a daily basis, such as: newspapers, magazines, TV shows, etc. Created materials are anything created by the teacher to supplement course books such as: crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, flashcards, etc. In addition course books are commonly used in teaching situationstyle. Course books have many advantages but should not be relied solely upon in a teaching situation. Some advantages would be that they are expected to be used by the students thus lending a certain comfort level. They can also provide a syllabus. However, course books can often be rigid and not flexible to student needs and sometimes they are predictable and boring.
