This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covered aspects of classroom management, including the methods and strategies a teacher can use to build rapport, provide effective instruction, and handle classroom discipline. The detailed analysis of teacher movements, gestures, and approaches to instruction and monitoring gave me a clear and comprehensive vision of how I will conduct myself during each of the ESA stages and how I will encourage student participation. For example, I will plan on writing all board work prior to the start of class and cover it with paper to control the pace of introduction of each topic or instruction. Ideally, I would like to use PowerPoint slides with instruction and visual aids in a single presentation for each lesson. With the use of PowerPoint, I could customize the pace of instruction to the class and present an almost unlimited variety of visual aids. If I will not have access to the necessary technology, I will use dry erase, chalkboards, cue cards, and paper pads to present materials. I do not know the potential range of class sizes I will teach, but I most likely will teach adults who have chosen to study English voluntarily. Those factors eliminate some potential discipline problems before I even enter the classroom.
