This unit focused on the teaching of receptive skills, namely reading and listening. After a brief description of the two main reasons for reading and listening - i.e., for a purpose or for entertainment - the unit described the various skills involved in receptive language usage, such as predictive skills, skimming and scanning. Finally, the unit highlighted common areas that can be challenging when teaching listening and reading skills, provided some examples of how these challenges can be overcome, and provided an example lesson that integrated and balanced receptive skills (listening and reading) with productive skills (speaking and writing).
