Speaking and writing are both used for the same purpose; the need or desire to communicate with one another. In the first place the teacher must create the need and desire in the students to communicate.In the speaking phase accurancy and fluency are of igual importance. A key step is to create a comfortable enviornment whereby the students feel comfortable speaking, albeit making mistakes. Writing can be another challenge althougher. English is not a phonetic language so many words keep the same spelling but different pronunciation. in some languages the characters and alphabet are unrecognizable. This will initially be a daunting task for a native Chinese or Japanese speaker for example.
