Teachers plan lessons with an objective in mind for each lesson. The objective revolves around teaching vocabulary, grammar structures, or language functions. Using the ESA method, teachers can develop class plans that will help the student be exposed, understand the meaning, construction, and practice the language. Grammar and vocabulary are best taught with a straightarrow ESA lesson while language functions are best with patchwork and boomerang ESA lessons. This implies as well that many grammar and vocabulary lessons will be planned for beginning to intermediate levels while intermediate to advance level students move on to more language function lessons.
