This Unit on the Evaluation and Testing of students covers the three main forms of assessment: tutorials, assessment by fellow students, and tests. The Unit looks at different ways of evaluating the progress of students and of initial placement in a class. There are four main types of tests: placement; progress; diagnostic; and practice. Each has its uses. Practice tests are usually in the same form as external examinations which students may sit following a ESL course. Diagnostic and placement tests have similar aims to each other, but diagnostic tests may be more extensive and may help the teacher development strategies and materials for a student/s with areas of particular difficulty. Finally, a list of external examinations, such as the American TOEFL and the range of examinations available through Cambridge University.
