This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This lesson focused on teaching receptive skills: reading and listening. We covered why we read and listen, potential problems for learners and how to avoid these problems, as well as sample teaching lessons. I learned that we read and listen basically for two reasons: for entertainment or for a specific purpose and that the skills can be broken down into prediction, deduction, skimming, scanning and detailed understanding. I also learned that we can avoid potential problems in teaching by pre-teaching vocabulary and grammar, careful selection of texts, varying the topics chosen, and creating interest before you start teaching. An example of generating interest would be to play a clip from a movie and ask what students know about the actor in the film and then ask what they would you like to know about them.
