In order for a teacher to assess the level of her student, placement tests are given to assist teachers so that she can allocate groups according to their learning knowledge and ability. These start with simple questions and progressively become more difficult. The periodic progress test usually covers the work learnt and can be a written test, to an activity or even a game. These also are more frequent depending on the Teacher. The Diagnostic Test are designed to let the teacher and student know where and what they do and don't know at the beginning of a course. As for the Practice test this gives the teacher and student a general overview of what they have accomplished. There are a number of General External Examinations on offer such as
-TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language (used for testing all levels)
-IELTS - International English Language Testing System (Ideally for students who work or needs to study where English is the form of communication)
- TOEIC - Test of English for International Communications (most recognised of the course for work/place English Proficiency)
There are a number of different categories of Cambridge exams :
- General English
- Skills for Life
- Business English
There are many external examinations some focusing on integrated skills while others on life skills
