This unit provides the other two basic skills required for learning a new language. These productive skills are speaking and writing. These two have equal importance. This unit explains the difference between accuracy and fluency activities. For the sake of correct speaking, accuracy activities are controlled by the teacher to ensure that students are using the correct grammar, pronunciation, etc. Thus it is important to present these activities during the study phase of a lesson. The fluency activities allow students to explore their newly learned skills and thus should be presented during the activate stages. With writing penmanship, spelling and punctuation may be a hurdle for students depending on previously learned writing skills, first language character systems, and other factors. I learned some very helpful ways to keep students encouraged during activities. I found some ideas with the suggested games segment of this unit. I'm inspired to use other popular games to keep my students interested in the lesson. I though about some issues that are unique to my current students here in Japan. Because japan uses a special character set for foreign words they often spell English words with the phonetic spelling of these characters which is wrong 100 percent of the time. Rather the spelling is incorrect in English. I am aware now that these mistakes will likely be made.
