This unit covered receptive skills and briefly explained the difference between receptive and productive skills. I learned that receptive skills are reading and listening and that having an understanding of all the words in a sentence does not always mean that a full understanding of the sentence gets across. This is why it is important to promote understanding of the language through use of receptive skills. I learned that lessons should incorporate all of the skills (receptive and productive) whenever possible so there is a balance in the learning of the language. I also learned how important it is to understand context when reading and listening as we use context to gather meaning from language and practicing these skills will help students to be more effective speakers and communicators of the English language.
