This unit introduced the concept of the four basic skills in any language; receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (writing and speaking), this unit was a reflection on teaching receptive skills, reading and listening, to students of an L2 language (a language that is not their own mother tongue). Prior to the study of this unit, I did already have a great understanding of the reasons and motivations for reading and listening; for a purpose (for example, reading an instruction booklet) and for entertainment (reading a novel for pleasure), alongside the specialist skills when reading or listening; for example skimming, scanning and deducing from the context of the text or dialogue. However, this unit has helped me think of different ways I can improve my students? confidence in their respective receptive skills in the classroom; for example exposing them to authentic texts, rather than non-authentic texts in class.
