Measuring and evaluating students is usually done through tests/exams. These tests are often good measuring sticks for teachers to gauge a students progress throughout their study period. Usually placement tests are given to check a students ability before entering the class. Progress tests are given through out the term to see how far the students have come and see where they need to further focus to help progress. There are also practice exams which help the students get ready for an upcoming external exam. It is important to know that the frequency of the tests maybe different for every class and institution. There is no right or wrong way.
