The conditional seems so complicated trying to figure out the different situations. Eventually it started to make sense - remembering that zero and first have to do with real situations and second and third with imaginary or hypothetical situations. I can see how students would have such difficulty with the verb placement and choice for each. I'm starting to understand better why the EFL students in my class make the mistakes they do. With reported speech, the changing of yesterday and today and tomorrow was interesting because I'd never thought of it before in terms of days/times changing. And breaking down the sentences into how to report back, changing here to there, etc was something I hadn't thought of before as well. It's easy to see why English is such a hard language to learn.
