This unit introduces sentences that contain \"if\". These are called conditional sentences, which refer to past, present, and future possibilities. There are five main conditionals: zero, first, second, third, and mixed. Students often mixed up the first and second conditionals and the third and mixed conditionals. Some techniques for teaching the differences between the conditionals include split sentences, chain conditionals, and what would happen if sentences. In all of these activities, it gets the students answering questions posed by the teacher or by fellow students. They can then hear and figure out how best to respond to the conditional question. This unit also talks about direct and reported speech. When a person is reporting what another person said, the tense of the words will often change to accommodate the jump in time from when the first person directed the speech and the second person reported it. In most cases, the question word stays the same but the verb changes into the positive form. It should be noted that there when writing reported speech, there are no quotation marks because the second speaker is not quoting the exact words the original person spoke. Group activities are beneficial when teaching direct and reported speech. This lets the students speak to each other and learn how to transfer information from one source to another.
