This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The most insightful thing I learned in this unit was the 1st day advice of not using a book. Using the book may intimidate students on the first day. With a new group especially, its good to do some fun activities with students to make them feel comfortable, have fun, and build rapport. It helps the students get to know each other and the teacher. When dealing with large classes, its hard to do large class activities so pair work and worksheets are a good alternative to large class activities that we might not have room for. When dealing with students that are reluctant to participate, its helpful to do role play exercises to help relieve some stress, pair work is less intimidating, and letting students do some recordings of their own in their personal time for the teacher to review and give advice.
