This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Teaching pronunciation and phonemes is very useful to students to support their speaking. Students speaking Indonesian often have difficulty in the phonemes /ð/ and /?/ which appear as TH in English words. Also, Indonesian only has six to seven vowels compared to English's much more vowels, including diphthongs, triphthongs, and long vowels. Indonesian learners also oftentimes (empirically speaking) omit some phonemes such as /k/ and /s/ in |asks| and many more.
This, and also the fact that intonation and stress are two things that are often overlooked by teachers. In the end of the day, I need to consider that speakers of Indonesian will have their own special \"Indonesian accent\" when speaking English, but speak correctly is not something wrong either, right?
