This unit talks about the importance of teaching receptive skills. As with any language, many students will first develop their receptive skills, so they can understand and eventually use what they have learned with their productive skills. There are many ways to use these receptive skills, such as skimming or deduction of content. For the students to be able to use these skills, we have to be very careful, as we not only have to approach the language with clarity, but also with a wide variety of topics as to create an interest. The easiest (for students) receptive skill is reading, as they have the text in front of them and can read it as many times as necessary to understand, or at least deduce, the text. For the listening skill to be as widely successful as reading, we need to speak clearly, and in a level that all students find comfortable. This is the first part of the basic language skills.
