This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In my unit 2 reflection, I discussed my awareness of the way in which native English speakers absorb (over time) the intricacies of their native language (L1). After studying this unit, I now know this is a well known phenomenon called \"natural language acquisition\". While teachers will never be able to fully replicate the benefits of the natural language acquisition that comes from living in a country in which English is the L1, their ultimate aim should be to create a learning environment which mimics the context in which natural language acquisition takes place. There are many different approaches which place emphasis on certain elements of language as more essential to language acquisition than others, and the debate continues as to which approach is the most effective. However, the \"Engage, Study and Activate\" (ESA) method can be seen as one of the most prominent and effective methods employed for English teaching today. The ESA method is based on the premise that the most effective learning environment is created when teachers: ensure that students are constantly exposed to, and speaking, the language being studied; employ a variety of teaching methods (based around an Engage, Study and Activate stage) which are appropriate to their students' culture and level of understanding; and provide well-timed and positive feedback to their students.
