This unit is about evaluation and testing of students of English language. There are number of ways to access a students English language such as tutorials, evaluation by students and by tests. The tutorials can take place with whole group or with individual students. The evaluation by students is useful to evaluate their course by means of questionnaire or guided discussion. Tests are the most appropriate way to check the student's ability and progress at the start and end of the English course. Tests can be divided into categories based on different stages of course such as placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests and practice tests. The placement test is used to grade students language levels prior to commencing an EFL course. Progress test is used to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten. Diagnostic test is usually given at the start of the course to see what students already know. While practice test or the external test check the student's ability at the end of course. The different general external examinations are TOEFL, IELTS & TOEIC. Apart from this, the various Cambridge examinations are PET, FCE, CPE, KET & CAE. Cambridge English Certificates in ESOL Skills for Life (Skills for Life Certificates) are designed to be taken by people who have moved to Britain from other countries. BEC & BULATS exams are undertaken for business English.
