Unit 14 discuses the pros and cons of various books and materials. Course books provide a certain sense of stability and progression to both students and teachers, but are always a compromise due to the fact that they're geared toward a general audience rather than individual students. As such, a good teacher should always omit, replace, adapt and supplement textbook activities. Supplements should ideally be a balance of authentic and created materials. Authentic materials such as songs, menus or poems are often more interesting and rewarding for students. However, created materials can be fitted to students needs and levels. Possible supplements include flashcards, role play cards, cross words, word searches, gap-fill activities, etc. Ultimately, a teacher's goal should always be to meet the students' needs, and not over-rely on any single source for materials.
