In unit 11 I studied the receptive skills. These are reading and writing. The reasons to carry them out are: for purpose (achieve a particular goal) or entertainment (because it is pleasurable).
With both we employ a number of skills such as: prediction, scanning (read or listen for specific information), skimming (we read or listen to get the general idea), reading for detailed information (one listens or reads in a concentrated manner) and deduction from context (deduce the meaning of words, phrases from the text or listening).
On the other hand, some problems may arise with:
-language (teachers should pre teach vocabulary and be careful with the selection of texts)
-topics (teachers shuould cater for the students' needs and interests)
Therefore, teachers should create interest and the tasks should promote understading as opposed to just checking understading.
