Unit 6 gave me information about Past Tenses. The past tense describes a past event or a state of being. The two most common past tenses in English are the Past Simple and the Past Continuous. We use the Past Simple tense in English to talk about events or situations that are finished. Normally we use a time reference. We also use the PS tense in English to talk about long-lasting events or situations in the past. Past Continuous Tense. We use PCT to talk about what was happening at a particular time in the past and to give descriptions and background information. To talk about temporary situations in the past. To make polite requests. Both Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous can be used to talk about actions or situations that were in progress at a certain point of time in the past. While the past continuous merely shows continuity, the past perfect continuous tense also puts an emphasis on the idea of duration. It is mainly used to indicate the duration of a past activity or state.
