This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this lesson, I learned the importance of both receptive skills; which are reading and listening. I learned that when teaching language learners about these two receptive skills, the information presented to the student should be strong enough that it grasps the attention of the learners; therefore creating a motive for them to want to understand the vocabulary words presented in the text. I learned that these receptive skills are necessary in order for English learners to advance to the next level; therefore a proper lesson must be orchestrated in order for students to understand the depth of the text and to learn the definitions of the words that they are being introduced to. For example, if I know as an educator that my students have a love and passion for cars; maybe introducing an article on Nascar; which is pretty popular in the states. I would begin with the engage stage: have the students think and verbally express to me their thoughts about Nascar. Moving forward, I would go into the study phase where I introduce some of the rigorous vocabulary words to the students to get any potential hurdles out of the way. I would pass out work sheets to help the student work on the language and to get them prepared to dealing with the verbiage. Furthermore, I would complete the lesson out with another engage phase, and an active phase to bring all we discussed about Nascar as a class.
