It has been very helpful to me to clarify the difference between receptive and productive skills, and to highlight the four necessary skills for effective communication in any language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). I am personally a very visual learner and have a deep love of literature and art, so my natural tendency is to focus predominately on receptive skills because this is what typically interests me the most about a foreign language. However, students have many motivations for learning English and every student will prioritize different elements of the language depending on their needs. For this reason it is important to give equal weight to different skills, as well as different interests in selected material so that students are inspired to pursue English further. Integrating these different skills must be considered when designing the different components of an ESA lesson plan.
