If I am to be honest, my head is swimming slightly from that unit. This is without a doubt one subtle facet of language I have never thought too much about when using it myself, but clearly makes such a difference. The combination of tense shifts as well as hypothetical and the seemingly endless combinations that can be mixed with both is no doubt a reason students struggle to grasp the concept. I think that writing things down almost in a timeline (that is to say visual aids) is at least the best way for my brain to wrap my head around this concept, and I think might be useful to take into a classroom setting as well.
