If I am teaching beginner students, I will be aware of the student needs and why they are sitting in my classroom would be a good place to start. I would ensure that I was sensitive to their needs and try to respond to them as individuals, particularly if they were young learners who needed to be motivated. The support would imply that I would praise and encourage frequently especially the younger learners while encouraging the students to speak as much as possible. I would be aware that listening to a new language is an important part of the learning process and that good listening skills take time to develop. Patience and repetition may play a more important role in the beginner classroom where students may need to hear the language many times before they begin to understand. As far as the teaching is concerned, I would ensure that I had clear and realistic aims and that I communicated these to the students as far as possible. In the initial stages there would be many visuals and board work. I would moderate and simplify my language and ensure that instructions were always clear and simple. Above all I would focus on what is easy rather than what is difficult while constructing lessons to ensure that the students felt that after each one they had made some progress. Finally, If the students had no knowledge of the Roman alphabet, I would adapt my teaching to expose them to basic literacy skills as they began to learn the new language.
