Unit 14 focused on the course books and lesson materials. It outlined the the difference between authentic materials e.g. newspapers and created materials such as cross words. Both are useful resources that can assist ESL learners in different ways. In addition to this, the unit provided a definition, advantages and disadvantages of the use of course books in the classroom. Whilst they are useful resources that can offer good ideas and some guidance, teachers must be critical of relying on them entirely. They can often be too generalized and don't target the specific topics and language skills that your particular class needs. Consequently, it is best to use a course book in addition to your own materials supplementing or adapting as needed.
