This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The unit on equipment and teaching aids discussed the various tools and technologies a teacher has available in order to make lessons more effective and interesting as well as less dependent on the textbook. The one resource every classroom needs is a board of some sort. Whether it be a whiteboard or flip chart, this helps draw the attention of the students. I learned that planning and organizing beforehand what is written on the board is crucial and the teacher ought to make a board plan. Other technologies discussed were interactive white boards, overhead projectors, cassettes/CDs, DVD, online material, and video cameras. As with the traditional resources, pre-planning and having a back up plan is especially important in case of technological difficulties. Use of visual aids (photos, real objects, pictures) can be very helpful in stimulating discussion and \"bringing the outside world in\". But perhaps the most useful resource available to students is a good dictionary. These help the student know the meaning, pronunciation, and usage of a word. I learned that students should be encouraged to use English - English dictionaries and that there are good \"learner\" dictionaries available for students. There are also tons of helpful resource books available to teachers to supplement or adapt the material in the text books and will help make the class more interesting me stimulating.
