Unit thirteen covered coursebooks and lesson materials. First we looked at authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are things like magazines and newspapers, about anything a native speaker would read. Created materials are materials created by the teacher, like flashcards. Both have their advantages and the teacher should choose materials that are suited for the level of his or her students.
Next we looked at course books. There are advantages to using a course books like providing continuity and progression. But, there are also negatives like the book not always fitting the needs of students. There are four different options for use of course books: omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
