This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
It is important to pick topics of interest when teaching reading and listening because if a student is not interesting in the material it is easy for them to drift from the conversation. It is also important to use non-authentic texts as well as authentic texts because while authentic texts give students confidence in their skills, non-authentic texts will teach them to piece the text together based on what they do know. When a teach speaks the language at the head of the class the students begin to pull out words they know to make sense of what the teacher is saying and will eventually begin to understand and learn the words they do not. The use of non-authentic texts will be helpful also in the reading stages because they will have more time to sit with the material and make sense of it. The use of a jumbled story or sentences would make great exercises to work together with classmates to learn from one another how to piece together information.
