This lesson provides an overview of teaching receptive skills in the ESL classroom. It offers tips for getting the students more engaged in listening and reading activities that otherwise might intimidate the students or not interest them. Both of these are huge problems every teacher will come in contact with, especially with younger students who might not be as engaged or motivated as adult learners. I frequently encounter problems with my young students when it comes to finding topics that everyone can enjoy. It simply does not exist. The best a teacher can hope for is that each student at some point in the class will study a topic that interests them or they will look forward to lessons that feature topics they enjoy. I will no longer be focused on finding the one topic the children will all love, but instead will pic topics for each student.
